Year 3 and 4 Learning Journey (Flying Saucers, Aliens, Supernova)
We have lots of great things happening during the Spring Term 1 so below is a brief overview of what we will be learning together on our journey.
Class 7 Flying Saucers: Tuesday with Doncaster Rovers and Wednesday
Class 8 Aliens: Tuesday with Doncaster Rovers and Friday
Class 9 Supernova: Tuesday with Doncaster and Friday
Please make sure your child has their PE kit in school on these days (indoor and outdoor and appropriate footwear).
We appreciate that time is very busy for all of us, but reading at home with a parent, carer, older sibling or friend, is so important for all our children. It strengthens their confidence, fluency and inference skills and backs up the important work we do at school. So please make time to hear your child read.Â Please do not forget to sign in their reading diary each time your child reads.Â We expect the children to read a minimum of 3 times per week at home. If your child does read 3 times, they will be entered into the Reader Leader competition where they could win prizes!
We will be giving the children a book review to complete before they will be allowed to change their book to check they understand what they have read.
Moorends Library Visits
On a Friday afternoon, the Year 3/4 classes will be taking it in turns to visit the local library. We walk down after lunch and the children will listen to a story, read by one of the librarians. This is a brilliant opportunity for the children to extend their reading skills even further.
Spellings will be handed out every Friday, ready for the test the following Friday.Â Year 3/4 are expected to learn 108 curriculum words over the academic year. The children will cover the same spellings 3/4 times over the academic year to ensure the spelling pattern is embedded. Please encourage your child to practise these spellings as it will really help within their literacy work.
Our literacy lessons will be centred around the text, The Hobbit by JRR Tolkein, which will link to our topic on Misty Mount Sierra. We will be exploring non-chronological reports and poetry.
We will be expecting all our children to join their handwriting and will be practising regularly in class. If there is any opportunity at home where you could reinforce and practise handwriting that would be a great help.

Throughout this term, the children will be reading The Worst Witch by Jill Murphy in small groups with the class teacher on a weekly basis.
Maths and Times Tables:
We will be following the Year 3, 4 curriculum for maths and working on number and place value, addition and subtraction, division and multiplication, shape and measures, and statistics. A huge focus will be placed on deeper learning and reasoning skills where the children will be applying their mathematical knowledge and understanding in a range of contexts.
Times table knowledge and practise will also be a target for all children throughout the academic year. By the end of Year 4, the children should be able to recall at speed all of their times tables up to 12×12.Â www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/hit-the-buttonÂ and https://ttrockstars.com/ are great websites to use to help with times tables. Please encourage your child to practise their tables as much as possible as they will be completing a times tables test on a weekly basis in maths.

|French||Year 3: Â correct form of address for adults (Madame, Monsieur, Mademoiselle), making statements about themselves and others (name, age, colour of eyesÂ etc.) and learning to read, write and say numbers to twenty.
Year 4: five vowel sounds, practising days of the week and months of the year, reading, writing and saying numbers to fifty and writing short simple sentences using nouns, verbs and adjectives.

Friday’s Star of the Week Assembly:
Star of the Week Assembly will be held every Friday at 9am in the hall. Your class teacher will inform you if you are invited to attend.
